Molly and Asa both mastered Xtra Math addition!! Woohoo! Sophia was so proud of them and sneaked into the picture too. Way to be goal getters!

Thursday was secret theme spirit day and Team Tierney chose 'sports fans' as their theme. Students designed paper jerseys to hang on the door to show our class team spirit.

Sports fans was the theme chosen by this group of kiddos. They dressed the part and spent the afternoon doing sports related place value activities including this jeopardy game. It was a close game with boys sneaking ahead for the win.

Garfield second grade students participated in a Place Value Bootcamp Thursday, but physical rigors were exchanged for mental rigor through fun activities like place value Uno, place value wars, building place value towers, and making place value bracelets.
We had so much fun this afternoon changing classrooms! They got to play uno place value, place value wars, place value towers and then come back to our classroom and make place value bracelets!!!

Ms. Perez's second grade class worked on focused listening during counselor class with Ms. Ryan. They were able to listen and follow instructions to add the needed details to their guided coloring page.
School spirit week in full swing here at Garfield!

During the rotation the kids work on their IXL’s, Study Island, Waggle and work with me playing math games or reading games depending on the day. They knocked it out of the park with staying focused and working hard.

Viking Pride!

Mrs.Waun's class is full of mad scientists for spirit week!

Today is National Food Service Employee Day. Take a minute to thank our wonderful food service staff for all they do!

Owen has crushed his goal of passing Xtra Math addition!! Way to work hard and I look forward to the amazing things you will do this year!!

Monday started off on a happy note with some Homecoming Week spirit as students donned vibrant neon colors for our first dress up day of the week.

This Viking has already met the second grade AR yearly goal! He has been keeping up with all of his class work and using every free minute to read. When he saw the sign I wrote, he reminded me that his personal goal is higher than 50 points. What ambition! Way to go, Coen!

Today's Homecoming Week dress up day then was 'dress to impress'. These girls rose to the challenge! Unfortunately, one student had to leave for her bus before the picture was taken.

Mrs. Waun's student's did a scavenger hunt, searching for information listed in short bios hanging in the hall telling about famous Hispanics. The lesson ties into National Hispanic Heritage Month, observed from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15 in the U.S., that recognizes contributions and influence of Hispanic culture to the nation's achievements, culture, and history. Students learned about famous Hispanic engineers, astronauts, sports figures, singers and songwriters, poets and journalists, actors and actresses, civil rights leaders, filmmakers, playwrights, politicians, a Supreme Court Judge and more.
Second grade students in Mrs. Perez's class learn about the common states of matter - solid, liquid and gas - as they moved through their science lessons Tuesday.
Third grade students at Garfield celebrated Constitution Day with about 17,000 other 3rd graders nationwide, through a virtual presentation hosted by USD 233 and Judge Robert J. Wonnell of the Kansas 10th Judicial Court in Olathe. Students learned about the U.S. Constitution from Judge Wonnell, and other guest speakers including U.S. Supreme Court Justice Neil Gorsuch and U.S. Senator Jerry Moran. Students also participated in a virtual mock jury trial with Judge Wonnell presiding, to learn about one of the core tenets of the Constitution.
The process of the mock trial aligns with the third grade history, government and social studies standards approved by the Kansas State Board of Education.
